Kings South MLA

About Derrick J. Kimball

  • Managing Partner at Kimball Law
  • Practiced law in the Valley for 40 years
  • Former MLA
  • Former lecturer at Acadia University

I was born, raised and educated in Nova Scotia. My father was an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force which required postings in and out of the province. Our last posting was Greenwood, my first introduction to the Valley. I then spent my formative years on our family farm in Antigonish where I learned the value of hard work, respect for Mother Nature and a love for the land.

I attended St. F. X. U . and Dalhousie Law School. I established my career as a lawyer in the Annapolis Valley where I met and married my wife Heidi Foshay Kimball. We have three sons together, Jared, Nathaniel and Tristan. We live on Prospect Mountain.

I have extensive experience in law, politics and business. As a practicing lawyer, I understand problem solving for clients and finding the best ways to achieve positive outcomes. I have owned and managed a small business in the Annapolis Valley virtually my entire working life – employing local people, supporting local businesses, paying taxes. As a commercial and residential property owner, I became
familiar with the tax and regulatory burden of citizens. I have an established record in politics. I taught a course in political science at Acadia University called ‘Law and Politics’. I have written extensively regarding law, politics and society for many years, voicing my concerns and advice on a broad range of topics.

If you want social and political change, you must be engaged in politics. As a province and a country, we face unsettling times and tremendous change – climate,  technology, social attitudes and interaction. Government has been slow to recognize and manage these issues. As a general rule, we have not been electing capable people to public office resulting in poor leadership. Now, more than ever, we need our most capable people  – with the knowledge, experience and empathy to navigate these turbulent times. We need vigour and vision.

I am seeking election in the upcoming provincial election to become MLA in Kings South.

Why?

I’ve done this before. I know what it takes.

Now, is when we need experience coupled with a strong work ethic to initiate, expand and increase opportunities in Nova Scotia and for Nova Scotians.

Concerns:

  • Incompetent government.
  • Increasing social antagonism.
  • Increasing citizen disconnect from government.
  • Lack of government leadership on vital issues including climate change and delivery of health care.
  • Stagnating and aging population due to the emigration of our young people

Needs:

  • We want government  to be accountable and transparent. The government’s business is the people’s business.
  • We want government to spend our tax dollars responsibly
  • We should implement  tax and regulatory reform designed to make Nova Scotia a business start up destination.
  • We need infrastructure investment for the new technologies. – high speed internet, distance education and telemedicine.
  • We should target support for expanded tourism and agriculture, with an emphasis on growth and food security.
  • We need to rationalize our health care system to provide universal and easy access to primary health care including timely mental health care.
  • We should initiate a new partnership between business and the environment to ensure that every new enterprise is sustainable so that our human endeavours are compatible with the integrity of our physical and biological habitat.
  • It is high time we tackle the problem of affordable education and student debt.
  • We need to ensure that law enforcement and the justice system are accountable to everyone and work in harmony with community services to address the underlying causes of crime – poverty, education, addiction and mental health.
  • We should stop the outward migration of the next generation –  by providing better opportunities for them here, at home.
  • We need to return our economy to normal by putting people safely back to work.

We’re Looking for Volunteers!

If you’re looking for a way to contribute to your community and want to help bring the changes you believe in to your local government, then please get in touch with me through my email or this form.

Local and provincial elections don’t get the same public or media attention that federal elections do. However, they are very important and directly impact our daily lives.

By volunteering, you can help us fight for:

  • A more accountable, transparent and competent government.
  • Reform to make Nova Scotia more business-friendly.
  • A competitive Nova Scotia that can attract more talent, youth and business.
  • The right kinds of investments in new technologies, education and healthcare.
  • Achieve affordable healthcare and tackle the student debt problem.

We believe in a government elected for its merits, not for its “with the times” words or to satisfy a quota. Get in touch if you’re looking to volunteer. Together, we can work to form a better government for our beautiful province and our home, Nova Scotia.
